San Luis Reservoir sits in the grassy hills of the western San Joaquin Valley near Pacheco Pass, just seven miles west of Los Banos on Highway 152. The San Luis Project, a joint undertaking by the federal government and the State of California, broke ground in 1962 to create the complex of reservoirs managed today by the California Department of Parks and Recreation, California Department of Water Resources, and the Bureau of Reclamation. The reservoir stores water for both the State Water Project and the federal Central Valley Project, making it essential infrastructure for the region's agriculture and communities.

The park offers diverse recreational opportunities that draw residents and visitors year-round. Boating, board sailing, fishing, swimming, and windsurfing are popular water activities. On land, visitors camp, picnic, hike, and ride horses. The park operates daily from 6 a.m. to sunset, with day-use fees of $10 or $12 during peak seasons. A visitor center at Romero Overlook provides information about the reservoirs and water projects. The area can get quite warm—summer temperatures average mid-90s—but the reservoir itself provides relief on hot valley days.

For families in Los Banos, outdoor recreation at San Luis Reservoir is woven into the rhythm of life—weekend camping trips, fishing outings, and water activities mark the seasons. A term life policy protects the vacations and traditions you build with your family.
